Nestled in the heart of Chapel Hill, Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen is a must-visit destination for anyone craving authentic Southern breakfast and brunch flavors delivered fast and fresh. Specializing in classic Southern comfort food, this charming drive-thru spot has earned its reputation primarily through their large, homemade biscuits—fluffy, buttery, and perfectly textured to complement a variety of rich, hearty fillings.
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the biscuit sandwiches, with standout options like the Bacon & Egg Biscuit, Pork Chop Biscuit, and Bad Grandpa Biscuit—a generous combo that has customers coming back again and again. The biscuits themselves offer an irresistible melt-in-your-mouth experience, lightly golden on the outside yet tender and fluffy inside, creating the perfect vessel for crisp bacon, savory sausage, creamy cheddar, or tender chicken breast.
Beyond biscuits, the menu offers comforting staples such as Biscuits and Gravy and a hearty Big Breakfast Platter, serving up Southern flavors that hit all the right nostalgic notes. Complement your meal with a warm cinnamon roll, lauded by many as a sweet finishing touch, or grab a classic iced tea or rich hot chocolate to sip alongside.
Customers praise Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen for its quick service and value, especially the loyal fans of their chicken biscuit like Crowbird who calls it the “best chicken biscuit I have ever had, WOW!” Yet, the experience is not without some quirks; frequent visitors mention that the drive-thru line is often busy, reflective of the restaurant’s local popularity. While the staff may not always greet you with warmth, the quality of food more than compensates, creating a unique dynamic where the focus is firmly on delivering fast, satisfying Southern comfort food rather than an elaborate dining atmosphere.
One interesting recommendation comes from D. D. E., who finds the chicken bacon egg & cheese biscuit rich and buttery but suggests doubling up on hashbrowns to truly satisfy your craving. The iced coffee also offers a distinctive homemade feel, calling for a little mixing to tailor it to your taste, which adds a personal touch that Starbucks-style chains can’t replicate.
Whether you’re rushing to start your morning, fueling up before a big local event, or simply craving an indulgent Southern bite, Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen offers an authentic, no-nonsense roadside experience bursting with the flavors and heartiness only homemade biscuits can provide. It’s clear that this Chapel Hill gem stands as a beloved institution for locals and visitors alike, serving up some of the most memorable biscuit sandwiches you'll find anywhere in North Carolina.
Best chicken biscuit I have ever had, WOW! I’ll never visit Chapel Hill without picking up some - gotta be a great tailgate treat for a noon kick.
Ordered drive though and they were pretty quick! Customer service was really sweet. We ordered the chicken egg and cheese biscuit, hashbrowns, bad grandpa and cinnamon rolls. All were good portion sizes and pricing. Sweet tea was Great! We try to eat a little more on the lower sodium side so if you are monitoring that as well, be careful! Not salty but definitely salted.
The bad GramPa combo honest review: ... the chicken bacon egg & cheese biscuit was rich and buttery, very tasty but I was disappointed in the tiny little hash brown that came with it. You really need about 2 of those little triangles, at least, to enjoy with your biscuit. The ice coffee is litERRally flavored coffee with ice so don't expect Starbees! Plus you have to mix it up yourself (with cream and sugar... try dissolving that in the cold coffee with ice cubes ...yeahh no!) Disheartening. Lastly, I also had the cinnamon roll which has this biscuit type vibe covered with cinnamon sugar and icing. I enjoyed the food overall. Give them a try, breakfast is important!!! The customer service was pleasant and the food came out pretty quickly.
This is drive thru only! Prepare for a wait in the morning! But totally worth it. Had biscuit with egg and cheese! Delicious, buttery, melt in your mouth biscuit! Highly recommend the cinnamon roll as well! Amazing local place!
If you're in a hurry and craving a quick Southern-style bite, Sunrise Biscuit is worth a stop—but know what you're getting into. The walk-up service is impressively fast. However, don't expect a warm welcome. The staff can be noticeably curt, bordering on rude. Friendliness isn't on the menu here, and you're likely to feel more like you're a burden than a customer. Despite the lackluster service, the food exceeded my expectations. The cinnamon roll is a standout—flaky, warm, and just the right amount of sweet. It’s the kind of pastry that makes you forget how grumpy the cashier was. The plain biscuits themselves are cheap, light, and buttery. I wouldn’t recommend the cheddar cheese biscuit as it’s a plain biscuit with what looked like a slice of Kraft cheese. I think the menu item should be named biscuit with cheese verse cheddar biscuit. Sunrise Biscuit nails the “fast” and the “flavor,” but drops the ball on hospitality. If you can overlook a rough attitude in exchange for a hot, delicious treat, it's a solid stop. Just don't come looking for Southern charm—only Southern carbs.
